The Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport (IATA: SJC, ICAO: KSJC, FAA LID: SJC) is a city-owned public-use airport serving the city of San Jose and region know as the Silicon Valley. It is named for San Jose native Norman Yoshio Mineta, who was Transportation Secretary in the Cabinet of George W. Bush, and Commerce Secretary in the Cabinet of Bill Clinton, although the airport is also named to recognize Mineta’s service as a Councilman for, and Mayor of, San Jose. It is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection international Port of entry. It is located two nautical miles (4 km) northwest of Downtown San Jose, near the intersections of three major freeways, U.S. Route 101, Interstate 880, and State Route 87. The airport’s dominant carrier is Southwest Airlines. Alaska Airlines, along with its regional subsidiary, Horizon Air, is the second largest carrier at the airport. The airport offers free Wi-Fi in all its terminal buildings.

High-Performance Air Chairs, San José Airport, California, U.S.

As the first U.S. airport to build a new international terminal after 9/11, the spotlight was very much on the Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport (SJC) in San José, California, U.S.A.

SJC’s challenge was to construct a high performance terminal in a highly competitive Bay Area market, which would in turn provide an excellent traveler experience that would persuade customers to use SJC rather than the nearby San Francisco and Oakland airports. In addition, the new expanded airport terminal had to achieve a minimum of LEED Silver under San Jose’s city mandate.

The underlying premise of this ventilation solution is to supply cool air at a person’s seated level and use the natural stratification that occurs because hot air rises to maintain occupant comfort. Their displacement solution focuses only on maintaining comfortable conditions within the first 8-foot occupied zone from the floor up,  the cool supply air plumes around the occupants from the chairs, maintaining a comfortable environment around them.  Hence the “air chair”.
